On the contrary... some people view "desi" to be rather demeaning when compared to "indian".

People in India call themselves indians. 'Desi' has become synonymous with NRI...

and what would we (resident Indians) call NRIs abroad?

Paradesi?...(said in the arrogance drawl of Tamil movie actor Vijayakanth-can u recall which movie of his it was, Gee?)

sorry..that comment was incomplete..i was just wondering if that was possible..

no offence meant to u both..its a paradox..Indian refers to our country but is the English term..whereas Desi is a hindi word but can, as Harry says, be interpreted derogatively..so how to go about this????..:D

I've always found it odd to use/hear the term desi...sounds like u r referring to a commodity; doesn't it?
